On Friday, 16th of October, WEFTA participants are invited to join a full-day excursion (approx. 08:00–17:00) exploring seafood production, aquaculture, renewable energy, and innovative food production in Southwest Iceland. The tour will begin with a visit to Grindavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula, where participants will gain insight into Icelandic seafood processing and coastal industry operations. The visit to Grindavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula will also provide insight into how coastal communities and seafood industries are adapting to the recent volcanic activity in the region. The journey will then continue along the coastline to Þorlákshöfn, where participants will visit First Water, a large-scale land-based aquaculture facility currently under development in Iceland. In Grindavík, we will visit, Vísir, an experienced yet innovative fishing company operating exclusively long-line vessels and state-of-the-art processing facilities.
Lunch will be served at the well-known restaurant Fjöruborðið, famous for its lobster soup served with bread. A vegan option will also be available.
In the afternoon, the group will visit Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant and VAXA Technologies, where microalgae are cultivated using renewable energy and circular resource solutions.
The tour will return to Reykjavík at approximately 17:00.
Price: 70 EUR per person (trip and lunch at Fjöruborðið)
